A Good Kind of Weird is the story of fifteen-year-old Molly’s friendship with Kate, a popular camp counselor who touches Molly with her thoughtfulness and sensitivity, amuses her with her irreverent silliness, and impresses her with her strong principles. This novel portrays a gentle friendship between two popular, well-liked people, drawn together by their shared spirit of independence, their introspective natures, and a certain unusualness that Molly is only beginning to understand.
While Molly and Kate's friendship deepens, Kate's tenure at camp grows shaky. The rigid camp director learns of a growing unsanctioned recycling campaign that began with Kate's example in the dining hall. Other counselors are punished for smaller violations of the camp's rules, and as the recycling campaign grows, Molly worries that Kate will be fired. With this fear lending urgency to Molly’s need to understand herself and connect with Kate, Molly finds the courage to tell Kate the secret she’s been holding.
