Jack Archer eBook G A George Alfred Henty

Hmmm... I read the whole thing, but every once in a while I thought about dumping it. It's a story of a young (sixteen, I think) man's adventures serving in the British army in the1800's in the Crimean War. It's mostly interesting, to an adult, as a study of the society and living conditions of the time. The plot is rather simplistic: the hero, Jack Archer, gets into a series of adventures which he and his companions manage to survive mostly by Jack's inventiveness, fighting skills, and luck. I think a young teenager would be the best target audience because of the adventures. However, the author included a lot of information about the movements of the various units of the armies involved in each of the battles, none of which information impacted the story. Those parts can be skimmed though until the plot takes up again. Language and actions of the story are totally clean. I'd have no problem having my grandchildren read this.

Jack Archer eBook G A George Alfred Henty Reviews

I found this to be a fine adventure story. It is especially timely as Russia is again occupying the Crimea. The book in its way touches on geo-political concerns that have been with us for hundreds of years. I found the insight to be a revelation. I rate this book as both an adventure storey and as a useful informed geo-political insight to how we got here.
This Henty is another fabulous informative adventure full of history and geography. The hero really gets around
He has more lives than the proverbial cat. I knew that the Crimean war was dreadful. Now I know why. Bad generals and improved guns turned assaults into murder. This story should be read after that great biography about Peter the great.
.
I had never read any of George Henty's works before. Yes they are aimed at young men but include a level of detail about places and events not normally covered by current fiction. You can read this quickly and do not worry about inappropriate violence or sex. This book covers the Crimean War about which most Americans only know of the Charge of the Light Brigade. This book details the challenges of military camp life during the war.
This book's pages are printed in reverse order, and you have to start reading at the back cover. Mr. Henty's books are good, and this one is no exception-- except for the fact that it's defective.
This book starts off as a fun young adult adventure, then shifts into an excruciatingly detailed account of the Crimean War. It feels like an entirely different book at this point, and one which has no entertainment value at all. Chapter after chapter offer a microscopically focused look at this war that's been long lost to history, and if the book ever does return to its original purpose, I wouldn't know - just couldn't keep going that long.
The Crimean War and the incompetence of the British officer corps is well documented in this work of historical fiction. It was the last British war in which totally inexperienced men could be commissioned because of civilian ranking or wealth. It was the beginning of a much better hospital corps, and the conflict in which Florence Nightingale was made famous. The exploits Jack Archer are very unlikely, but demonstrate some of the requirements that were made on midshipmen in the days when ships were made of wood and men of steel.
This story, by G.A. Henty takes the reader through the main events of the Crimean War (1853-1856) through the eyes of a British midshipman.

It is, for a very pro-British writer, a remarkably fair and neutral account of events. I can also attest for its historical accuracy in my research and as the writer himself SERVED in the Crimean War you can rely on the accuracy of the day-to-day events of the fictional character.

It would be Five Stars except that a small piece of one of the most thrilling adventures in the story is sadly missing. It however in no ways takes away from the vivid descriptions supplied.

Enjoy.
