One of a series of four classic Scottish historical novels set between the middle of the 16th century and the closing years of the 18th century. This one tells the story of a Scottish pirate ship preying on merchantmen in the Indian Ocean at the turn of the 18th century, and the ‘gentlemen of fortune’ who crewed her. In part it is also the tale of a bitter feud between two Scottish captains, which in turn led later to the arrest in Scotland of Captain Green, an English pirate, whose execution said more about rivalry between the Scots and the English than about the crime he was hanged for. The hanging of Captain Green in 1703 has always been a controversial one, his crime never fully explained. This book, told through one of the Scottish pirates, is the story of what actually happened…

As with all four books in this classic adventure series, the historical background is perfectly drawn, as is the period style. Well received by critics when it was first published in 1933 — the author earned plaudits from reviewers on both sides of the border.

‘Mr McLellan has made his pack of bloody, unscrupulous pirates, with their schemes against each other, almost as pleasant to read about as they would be unpleasant to meet’— ‘As vivid a tale of villainy as one could wish for. He has a sense of the macabre and the sinister, allied with the most straightforward manner of telling a story, An excellent novel” — ‘A vividly told tale of piracy at the beginning of the 18th century when the trading relations between England and Scotland were far from pleasant. Thrilling reading’ —‘The historical facts and the romantic fictions are well blended and the result is a most delightful yarn, with something of the magic touch of R.L.S’…

About the Author

Scottish historian Duncan McLellan (1893-1957) , wrote his four classic Scottish novels while serving in India , firstly as chaplain to Scottish regiments serving there and then as head of the Scottish church in Bombay. His books, though novels, were steeped in the history of Scotland in the 16th to 18th century, and his style reflected that. He was an authority on the Scottish language of the period, and in his books he remained faithful to the speech of the times. Few, if any, modern writers could do the same today, and that scholarship in itself remains a remarkable feature of his work. A classic Scottish historical author of the first rank, his legacy is more than deserving of remembrance today when Scotland itself is rediscovering its own identity.

I found the characters very believable, not at all romanticized. Would have given five stars for originality, but the language, so praised by scholars, got to be so thick it interfered with enjoyment of the story. If you like this story, try "Requiem Shark."
