This book has made me rethink all of my work thus far! The book lays it all out on the table for you in a straight forward format. This is an abosolute must have for your reference library. Thank you Anthony Metivier for sharing your insights on how to create captivating, meaningful box-office hits in the disaster genre. Excellent examples from the main types of disaster movies with tips for writing each. Even includes tips on what not to do.
I wish I had this book before! It's just excellent if you want to keep in your story all the elements to create a script "turn page". You don't need to write a script with disaster to receive a better understanding about that genre. Doesn't matter the genre that you are writing your mind is creating fast, and ideas start to come out reading this book. I hope you enjoy this book like I did. Worth the money.
As a writer of action/adventure fiction and always in search of trade secrets to enhance my stories, I was quite interested in what Anthony would lay out for his readers. I was not disappointed. Not only did I get the "how's," I got the "why's" of creating disasters, tension, and conflict. I particularly enjoyed the historical references to Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Aristotle, etc, on which so much of our theatre is based.
I recommend this book -- certainly to all screenwriters -- as well as fiction writers who want to broaden their thinking and effectiveness.
I've made a few bucks from screenwriting, and would like to make a lot more...but it's a very tough biz. Disaster flicks seem to either make it very big, or fall on their proverbial faces. If you want to know why, and dodge the "failure" bullet, read this one, absorb it, then read it again. It cuts to the quick and will save you hours, days, months of frustration. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up and don't set it down until you get that fat check from a production company.
Though I'm an avid non-fiction reader, I love the movies. And I rarely know why I like and remember one movie over another. After reading Anthony Metivier's "Disaster Genre" book, I'm beginning to understand the underlying mechanics of what makes a movie tick.
What I found fascinating about this book is that you don't have to be a screenwriter to learn about a movie's architecture. It has applications for the everyday moviegoer like me. Like why a theme can have a plot and sub-plots, and when too much is going on, the movie might lose the audience.
The author relates how our inner characteristics are themes, and how their opposition creates tension that keeps the audience interested. He discusses the play of the actors/actresses, and their responsibility to the story. And shows how important the story line is to all involved.
With observations made from ancient plays, and modern day Disaster movies, one can begin to understand the enormity of making a successful story. Yet, Mr. Metivier has provided a blueprint for the Disaster genre story-writer. It's actually one that can be used in many other genres as well.
I'm a wannabe non-fiction writer (currently working on a book), but after reading this book, I'm intrigued with the potential of writing fiction. Now that I'll be watching movies with a renewed interest in structure, Anthony Metivier has made the idea a simpler one, indeed.
I'll be rereading this a second and third time, to be sure. There is much to learn here. Well done, Anthony! Kudos!
